Snow Removal

Dear Client/Media Information Disseminator/Reporter :

We are currently receiving a large volume of requests for the removal of snow from sloped and flat roofs, from all areas across the GTA.

As a result, we would like to extend a public service announcement for home and business owners on the subject.

  1. Many roofs already have considerable weight resting on their structures. Approximately one week ago we received a foot of snow in some areas of the GTA. Much of that snow has compacted and become heavier. We have now received an additional three to four feet of fresh snow on top of the prior dumping. The result is that many older residential structures, and particularly commercial roofs that have metal pan decks may be under tremendous load. The snow weight may increase with compaction and or melting.
  2. As a result of snow volume, many roofs may experience clogged or frozen roof drains pertaining to flat roofs, including perimeter leaks where snow may push up under metal flashings, ducts, skylights, etc. It is important that gas exhausting chimneys must not be blocked as it can be a dangerous circumstance leading to carbon monoxide poisoning.
  3. Homes that experience heat loss issues via the attic may be subject to ice damming perils, large icicle formation, and water back up penetration beneath shingles.
  4. That it is advised to contact and hire a licensed, insured, and WSIB compliant professional roofing contractor to remove excess snow and ice to avert water ingress perils.
  5. To exercise extreme caution if attempting one’s own snow removal as being unfamiliar with working at heights, working off ladders and roof structures, may be a  dangerous activity.
  6. That when moving heavy snow one must be cautious of possible cardiac events, muscle strains, dissiness, and hypothermia as temperatures with windchills have been in the -20degree Celsius range this week.
  7. Not to hire unqualified persons whom may pose an insurance liability risk if injured on your property without proper WSIB coverage and insurance. Further that there are roof scammers currently operating and using the snow opportunity to defraud seniors and vulnerable citizens.
  8. That using incorrect tools or removal techniques may result in avoidable roof damage or leaks.
  9. To check if their home or business policies cover water damage resulting from ice damming or snow load perils.
