Interlocking Driveway Toronto
Professional Installation, Design & Cost Guide 2026

Interlocking driveway installation in Toronto is one of the highest return exterior investments a homeowner can make. Avenue Road Masonry handles the full project from base excavation to final sealing using Unilock, Techo-Bloc, Permacon, and natural stone paver systems. Established in 2012 as a division of the Avenue Road Roofing Group, serving the GTA since 1974, our licensed masons deliver paving stone installations trusted by homeowners across Forest Hill, Rosedale, Toronto, North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Richmond Hill, Markham, Oakville, and Mississauga, with every project backed by a 2-year workmanship warranty.

A professionally installed interlocking driveway adds an estimated 5–10% to a Toronto home’s resale value and outperforms both poured concrete and asphalt across Toronto’s demanding 40–60 annual freeze-thaw cycles.

Why Choose Interlocking Stone Over Concrete or Asphalt in Toronto?

Toronto’s climate zone 6a delivers some of the most punishing freeze thaw conditions in North America for driveway surfaces. Here is how the three main options compare:

Factor

Interlocking stone vs Concrete vs Asphalt

Lifespan in Toronto

Interlock: 30–50 yrs (stone: 50–100) | Concrete: 15–25 yrs | Asphalt: 10–20 yrs

Freeze-thaw response

Interlock: flexes — no cracking | Concrete: rigid, cracks | Asphalt: softens & cracks

Repairability

Interlock: section by section | Concrete: full slab removal | Asphalt: patches degrade

Upfront cost (Toronto)

Interlock: $17–$35/sq ft | Concrete: $10–$20 | Asphalt: $5–$12

Resale value impact

Interlock: +5–10% | Concrete: neutral | Asphalt: neutral

Freeze Thaw Performance

Toronto experiences 40–60 freeze thaw cycles between November and April. Poured concrete is a rigid monolithic slab, when the clay heavy Toronto soil beneath it heaves, the slab cracks. Once cracked, water enters and accelerates damage each subsequent winter. Interlocking pavers are individual units with flexible sand filled joints: they move independently with ground movement, reset during thaw, and maintain a functional surface through decades of thermal cycling. A well installed interlocking driveway typically outlasts two full concrete replacements.

Repairability & Long-Term Value

When a section of interlock settles or a paver cracks, only that section requires attention, the rest of the surface is completely unaffected. This targeted repairability means the long-term cost of ownership for interlock is lower than both concrete and asphalt, even though the upfront installation cost is higher. Resealing or sand replenishment every 5–7 years maintains the surface in like new condition indefinitely.

Interlocking Driveway Installation - Our Process

Site Preparation & Sub-Base Construction

A properly installed interlocking driveway begins 12–14 inches below the surface. After removing the existing driveway material, we excavate to ICPI-specified depth for driveways subject to vehicle traffic. A compacted granular sub-base – 12” of ¾“ clear open-graded stone  is installed in 4-inch lifts, plate-compacted at each stage to achieve full particle lock-up and consolidation. A 1” thick of 1/4” clear open-graded chip stone  (ASTM No. 8) screeded over base. Drainage slope of 2% minimum away from the foundation is established at this stage, critical for Toronto’s clay heavy soil.

Paver Laying, Cutting & Finishing

Pavers are laid by hand in the chosen pattern, running bond, herringbone, 45-degree herringbone, basketweave, or custom design, and cut to fit at all borders and obstacles with a 16-inch wet saw for clean edges. PVC edge restraints are spiked at 12-inch intervals after laying is complete. Polymeric joint sand is swept across the full surface and vibrated into joints with a plate compactor. A final check with a 6-foot straightedge confirms level surface before the job is complete.

Paver Materials & Brands - What We Use in Toronto

Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers are the most popular choice for interlocking driveway installation in Toronto, durable, available in hundreds of colours and textures, and backed by manufacturer warranties. We work with all major brands available in the GTA market: Unilock (premium, lifetime guarantee on most products, most widely specified in Forest Hill, Rosedale, and Lawrence Park), Techo-Bloc (high-density, engineered for Toronto’s freeze thaw conditions), Permacon (reliable mid-range, strong local availability), and Best Way Stone (cost-effective with solid Toronto climate performance). For driveways subject to vehicle loads, we specify a minimum paver thickness of 70–80mm per ICPI driveway standards.

Natural Stone Pavers

For heritage homes, upscale residential properties, and clients seeking a finish that concrete cannot replicate, we install natural limestone, granite, and flagstone pavers for driveways, patios, and walkways. Natural stone is particularly popular in Forest Hill, Rosedale, Lawrence Park, and The Bridle Path, where it complements the heritage architecture. Properly installed granite or limestone pavers carry a 50–100 year lifespan.

Beyond Driveways - Patios, Walkways & Entry Steps

Interlocking Patio Installation Toronto

Whether you are in Etobicoke with a deep rear yard or Rosedale with a formal garden layout, we design and install interlocking stone patios in all sizes, from intimate 200 sq ft dining areas to large entertaining spaces with built-in borders, planting pockets, and integrated steps. Patio installations follow ICPI sub-base construction standards at reduced depth (6–8 inches for pedestrian use).

Front Walkways & Entry Steps

A front walkway in interlocking stone creates a cohesive exterior from the driveway to the entry door. We install walkways in widths from 3 to 6 feet with matching border pavers and integrated entry steps from sawn natural stone treads or large-format concrete pavers on a concrete base, frost resistant and level season after season, even on the sloping lots common in North York and Forest Hill.

Frequently Ask Questions - Interlocking Driveway Toronto

Interlocking driveway installation costs between $17 and $35 per square foot including materials and labour. A single car driveway (250–300 sq ft) runs $5,500–$10,500. A double-wide driveway (500–600 sq ft) runs $10,000–$21,000. Natural stone driveways cost 40–80% more. All projects backed by a 2-year workmanship warranty. Prices have increased 8–12% since 2023.

Properly installed concrete interlocking pavers last 30–50 years in Toronto's climate; natural stone pavers last 50–100 years. The most common cause of premature failure is poor base preparation, insufficient depth, inadequate compaction, or missing edge restraints, not the pavers themselves. Toronto's 40–60 annual freeze thaw cycles are demanding, but ICPI standard base construction handles them reliably for decades.

A standard single car driveway replacement takes 2–3 days from start to finish including removal of the existing surface and full base construction. A double-wide driveway with apron and walkway takes 3–5 days. Avoid vehicle traffic for 24–48 hours after completion.

In most Toronto residential cases, a permit is not required for a standard like-for-like driveway replacement within the existing footprint. However, widening beyond the permitted curb cut width, adding a new curb cut, or altering grading that affects municipal storm drainage may require a City of Toronto Right-of-Way permit under Municipal Code Chapter 743. We assess permit requirements as part of every estimate.

For Toronto's climate, interlocking pavers outperform poured concrete in three measurable ways: freeze thaw durability, repairability, and long-term cost of ownership. Concrete is rigid, when the clay heavy Toronto soil moves beneath it each winter, it cracks. Interlocking pavers flex independently and can be repaired section by section without disturbing the full surface. Despite a higher upfront cost ($17–35/sq ft vs $10–20 for concrete), interlock's 30–50 year lifespan versus 15–25 years for concrete makes it lower cost over time.

Interlocking driveways require minimal maintenance. Key tasks: (1) Replenish polymeric joint sand every 5–7 years or when joints appear visibly open, prevents weed growth and paver shifting. (2) Apply a penetrating paver sealer every 3–5 years to protect colour and stabilize joint sand. (3) Remove weeds from joints promptly before root systems displace the sand. (4) Avoid de-icing salt on the paver surface, use sand or calcium magnesium acetate instead, as salt degrades the polymeric sand binder. (5) Have any heaving sections assessed and repaired promptly before the base failure spreads.

For Toronto's freeze thaw conditions, Unilock and Techo-Bloc are widely considered the premium options, both manufacture high-density concrete pavers engineered specifically for Canadian climate performance and offer lifetime product warranties. For budget conscious projects, Permacon and Best Way Stone offer reliable performance at a lower price point. For maximum longevity, natural granite or limestone pavers outperform all concrete options.
