As soon as one turns right off from Bayview onto the Post Rd., the first building on the South side is covered with slate tiles. A project we have completed work on. Travelling east and onto the adjoining streets one will encounter estate homes; many of which are also adorning slate works.

It frames the images of English country estate homes and French Chateau Villas found throughout the British Isles and continental Europe. Slating is a trade not practiced by many today in the Toronto area, but AVENUE ROAD ROOFING® has represented a proven choice for repairs, maintenance, and replacement of slate roof assemblies in the community for over fifty years.
In addition to authentic slate tiles; for which such materials can be sourced from various quarries throughout North America; and which can be sourced in various colours: (example: emerald slates from Virginia and Pennsylvania), there are also synthetic slates that are available as a lighter weight alternative.
Synthetic slates also referred to as composite slates can vary in composition from manufacturer to manufacturer. We Promote ECO Slates™ as a brand which maintains consistency in colour, resists fading, and appears like authentic slate. Advantages include being considerably less heavy than the originals, and that they are priced competitively with higher end Luxury shingles. They are also fully recyclable. This product offers an excellent alternative for those wanting a premium appearance and upgrade from traditional asphalt shingles. The manufacturer warrants their materials for fifty years additionally.
When installing slate roofing, the associated metal flashings should be copper or leaded copper. If installing a one hundred year lasting product, one should utilize a 100 year metal such as leaded copper.

It would not be an exaggeration to state that our company has most likely installed more square footage (squares) of cedar shingles/cedar shakes in these original north Toronto neighbourhoods over the past five decades. Examples of our work can be spotted on Blythwood Ave., Dinnick Cres.,Teddington Park Ave., Park Lane Circle, and the list goes on.
Among the largest cedar restoration projects we have completed are the Canadian McMichael Art Gallery, The Markham Museum and townhouse complexes such as Crickle Wood Estates.
Cedar shingles and shakes should be installed by qualified and experienced vendors. The Canadian Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau (CCSB) is the governing organization the grades cedar products from the various mills in British Columbia. In addition, they provide education and standards for which cedar products must be installed to provide a product warranty to the consumer. AVENUE ROAD ROOFING® is one of the few certified installers for the CCSB in Ontario.
If you invest in a cedar roof or cedar walls, and expect a warranty, then invest in a proven supplier having the credentials and experience to honour these special Western Red Cedar products. Bridle Path / Lawrence Park Shingle Repairs and Shingle Replacement Services
The most common covering for steep sloped roofs over the past seven decades has been asphalt shingles. The modern incarnation of such are termed fiberglass laminate shingles. The construction of today’s asphalt shingles have made them a highly durable choice, typically lasting longer than the old version paper/asphalt shingles. The old paper/ asphalt shingles were known to claw and curl with long term UV exposure, particularly on south and western slopes in our market area. Today, a quality fiberglass asphalt shingle produced by Certainteed™ (Saint-Gobain) can reliably last for thirty years with trilaminate, Luxury versions designed to last fifty years.
To note is that all the shingle producers today have followed suit with this vendor’s strategy brought to market in Canada over twenty-five years ago. Although we have installed all types and brands of shingle products over the last fifty years, we have endorsed this brand because they have never failed to honour their product warranty where our company has been concerned. This also translates into peace of mind and value to our customers.
To note, is that we conduct criminal background checks, and are bonded to insure that the people who attend at our clients homes are a safe and reliable choice. Many of our staff have worked at ARR for over twenty years. It is an advantage to have people which have considerable experience, and who have caring for the solutions that are being provided.
Quite often, a shingle roof may not need replacing; just simply repairs. If you do not need a full roof replacement, we will tell you. If it is viable, we will offer a repair regimen which can be more budget friendly.
Most typically, shingle roofs will experience issues involving dislodged shingles, metal flashing failures, or issues at appliances such as skylights or protrusions through the roof.

Bridle Path / Lawrence Park Flat Roofing Replacements & Repairs
Homes and businesses that rely on flat roofs to protect their interior spaces and valuables, require a waterproofing system that is suited to the particular circumstances and design characteristics of a custom designed, and built home or commercial building.
In the Lawrence Park area; most homes will have conventional timber framing and board construction acting as the substrate beneath the waterproofing assembly. Because the homes are over one hundred years old as a majority; it is highly suggested to use a cold applied method of flat roofing to mitigate fire risk. That is most often what we will specify under such conditions.
Similar flat roof sub structures in the Bridle Path area should be treated the same way. There are however; many custom built homes in the neighbourhood that have flat roofs designed more akin to commercial type buildings. Some homes for instance are steel construction with poured concrete substrates and have inverted (PMR)- Protected,Membrane, Roof assemblies, as one example.
A PMR system has the waterproofing materials applied directly to the substrate beneath, with the thermal insulation being installed above instead of beneath, as is considered the conventional method. The insulation layer consists of Roofmate™ Styrene Insulation covered by a filter cloth fabric, and is held in place using heavy river-wash stone as ballast, or pavers to act as a roof terrace.
PMR roofs are more labour intensive and costly to source and repair leaks most typically, versus conventional systems. Everything must be taken apart, and set aside to reveal the waterproofing beneath. Some discuss that the advantage of such systems is that the waterproofing layer is protected from UV degradation ,and theoretically will last longer.
The waterproofing membrane types can be many, with options that include; hot asphalt with felt plies, two ply modified bitumen, which is either hot asphalt applied, cold applied adhesive applied, or torch applied; and there are systems categorized in the single ply membrane family which includes: EPDM, PVC, and TPO. Advantages of such products can include lower initial installation cost, reflectivity of white surfaced membranes such as TPO, and the fact that they are lighter weight. Such Systems can be fully or semi-adhered, using adhesives and hot air welding of seams.

Lawrence Park / The Bridle Path Exterior Carpentry
AVENUE ROAD ROOFING® has been blessed to have some excellent carpenters in our organization that can handle most items involving the exterior of your home or business.
Roof and ground level decks are popularly requested services along with porch rehabilitation, tongue & groove porch ceilings, gazebos, columns, he/she/play sheds, structural roof repairs, and so on.
To note is that we do not build new additions, but we can refer you to some excellent associate contractors that do. Our preference is to focus on projects that involve restoration, retrofit, and renewal.

The Bridle Path / Lawrence Park Eavestroughs / Soffits / Fascias / Siding / Custom Copper Work
Where eavestroughs (gutters) are concerned; most people give them little thought beyond the fact that they need to be inspected/ cleaned usually twice annually before the winter and after the winter.
Before the winter to insure there are no leaves in the gutters, and that downpipes are free of blockage. (this helps avoid winter leaks due to snow and ice back up). Inspection after the winter determines if there are leaking joints (miters), pipe splits, and whether one can observe water overflowing the front of the trough section(s).
This can signal repairs required or adjustments needed to the camber of the trough.
Commonly, we install 5”,6” aluminum K style gutters (the most cost effective option) which should be 0.27 gauge heavier gauge which is sturdier than standard 0.23 builder grade.
From there; pre-painted galvanized steel gutters and pipes can be custom fabricated.
Above that option, are copper or leaded copper eavestroughs available in standard sizes,that require soldering or braised joints to supply a durable,long living assembly. Commonly they are mated to 4” rectangular down- pipes or 3”x3” square pipes used on smaller projections like dormers and bay windows. Consider rain chains or copper conductor boxes to provide authentic details associated with many estate home architectural styles.
Half round style gutters with external brackets are also an option for those looking to replicate a European or Mediterranean architectural style.
If one does not have traditional exposed, or tongue & groove wooden soffits; (which we also can replace through our carpentry division); it is popular is to clad such areas with aluminum or copper soffit panels. This eliminates the need for painting and provides some protection from animal intrusion.
Most homes today have aluminum clad fascia boards to provide protection behind the gutters and to eliminate the need for painting.
Where siding is concerned; the products offered today have changed considerably from decades past. Today’s modern options like Celect™ from Royal Building Products, and Urbanix™ from Kaycan provide modern options that are highly durable, and that can even replicate the appearance of natural wood. Colours include all of today’s popular choices. Trending today are greys with black trims, with neutral colours representing a timeless choice.
We are also able to offer natural wood siding products which include cedar shingles, board and batten, and horizontal wood siding profiles. Such work is completed through our carpentry division. Fraser is a Canadian manufacturer of replicate natural siding products which are among choices available.
Custom copper work represents a service that many custom homes require either in association with full roof replacemnent, or as a restorative requirement pertaining to details such as bay roofs, barrel dormers, eyebrow dormers, ledges and sills, capping, gutters ,as well as cladding for various areas of the building envelope.
