Today’s metal roofing systems have more variety than you might expect – and the same material used to build a metal roof can be used to clad a building.
You may also be surprised to know that you can buy a metal roof that looks like it was done with traditional asphalt shingles. You can even buy metal shingles that have ceramic granule to simulate the texture of an asphalt shingle. Copper roof shingles are another option, but they are among the highest cost options.

Many metal roofing systems offer extended longevity, but the lifespan can vary, depending on the quality of the workmanship and materials. You should also know that metal roofing can be expensive to install – approximately two or three times the cost of asphalt shingles.
In commercial buildings, metal roofing is usually done with pre-painted, galvanized steel panels. The steel should be at least 26 gauge and it is often necessary to add strapping to the decking to avoid condensation build up. It may also be necessary to install snow guards, safety rails and ice catchers to protect the safety of pedestrians walking near the building.
